Houngarea marae is located in Pakipaki. Its principal hapū are Ngāti Ngarengare, Ngāti Papatuamāro, Ngāti Tamaterā and Ngāti Te Rehunga of Ngāti Kahungungu iwi.
The wharenui is also called Houngarea. This marae connects ancestrally to the waka Takitimu and the awa Tukituki.
