Mangatowai marae is located 5 km west of Taupo Bay on the Taupo Bay Road, off SH10. The primary hapū are Ngāti Aukiwa and Ngāti Kairiri of Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa.
The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Mamaru, the maunga Kario, the awa Mimiti and Waimahana Bay.
