Whitianga marae is located in Whitianga Bay, about 19 km south of Te Kaha. Its principal hapū is Te Whānau a Tutawake of Te Whānau a Apanui iwi.
The wharenui is called Tutawake, and the wharekai is Rangitetaetaea. The marae connects ancestrally to Mātaatua and Tauira-mai-tawhiti waka, the maunga Oariki, the moana Whitianga, and four awa: Motu, Okawhiti, Waihapokopoko and Waipapa.
