Tapiti marae is (also known as Whakaue after the whare tupuna standing on it) is located at Maketū in the Bay of Plenty. The primary hapū of this Ngāti Whakaue marae are Ngāti Tūnohopū, Ngāti Rangiiwaho, Ngāti Taeotu and Ngāti Hinerangi.
Wider Ngāti Whakaue/Te Arawa often utilise this key coastal marae, honouring the nearby final resting place of their ancestral waka, Te Arawa. At the apex of the whare tupuna is a depiction of Hatupatu who avenged the burning of Te Arawa waka.
