Whakataki (Te Hika o Papauma)

Whakataki marae is located on the coast at Whakataki, about 60 km east of Masterton. The hapū are Ngāti Hinepare, Ngāti Kakawa, Te Rautangata of the iwi Kahungunu. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Takitimu.

A fire destroyed the original wharenui in 1960. The current site can be described as a site of cultural and historical significance for Te Hika o Papauma hapū. The whare depicted in the photos is of the Kuia Paku's homestead or 'Old Lady Paku's' house. The tekoteko, Whareaute, which survived, is kept in the Whakataki Hotel. The hapū intends to build a new wharenui to replace the one that was burnt down.
