Waiotea (Tinopai) marae, located in Te Kōwhai, can be accessed only by private road and then on foot across a beach at low tide. It belongs to the iwi Te Uri o Hau of Ngāti Whātua.
The descendants of Waiotea marae trace their lineage to the waka Aotea, and the marae connects to the Kaipara Harbour.
