Wainui marae is located north of Matauri Bay, inland from Piapia Bay in Northland. The principal hapu is Ngāti Ruamahue of the iwi Ngāti Kahu.
Ngātiruamahue is also the name of their wharenui, descending from the tupuna Muimui. Wainui marae is associated with the two maunga Whakarara and Tu Kohatu, the Ngamoko River and the pa Rawhitiroa.
