Waiari marae is located about 25 km south of Gisborne, in the township of Muriwai. Its principal hapū are Ngāi Tawehi, Ngāti Kahutia, Ngāti Rangitauwhiwhia, Ngāti Rangiwaho and Ngāti Rangiwahomatua of Ngāi Tāmanuhiri.
The whare tupuna is also named Waiari. The marae connects ancestrally with the waka Horouta, the maunga Mātītī, and the awa Maraetaha.
