Tuahiwi

Tuahiwi marae is located between Rangiora and Kaiapoi, north of Christchurch. Tuahiwi is home to Ngāi Tūāhuriri, linking to the iwi of Ngāi Tahu. The new wharenui is named Maahunui II, and was opened on 1 December 2012. It has the simple gable form of a traditional whare but is otherwise unadorned.

This whare stands on almost the exact site of the ancestral whare tupuna Tū-te-kawa, which stood here until it was burnt down in 1872. Maahunui takes its name from the canoe of the shared Ngāi Tahu ancestor, Māui-tikitiki-a-Te-Raka. Tribal landmarks of Ngāi Tūāhuriri include Maungatere (Mt Grey), Ngā Tiritiri o Te Moana (the Southern Alps) and Ngā Kohatu Whakarekareka o Tamatea-pokai-whenua (the Port Hills).
