Te Paamu marae is located 5 km southeast of Te Puke just beyond the village of Waitangi on the Kaituna River. The primary hapū is Ngāti Marukukere of Tapuika, which affiliates to Te Arawa confederation.
The whare tupuna is named Tia after one of the twin elders, the other being Hei, who voyaged from Taputapuātea to Maketū on the Arawa waka.
