Te Kauhanga marae is in Peria, on the northern side of the Maungataniwha forest. The marae belongs to the hapū Te Paatu within the iwi of Ngāti Kahu, tracing their descent from the waka Māmaru.
The wharenui is named Te Poho o Ngāti Kahu. Te Kauhanga marae is connected to the maunga Maungataniwha, to the Oruru River and to Tokerau Bay.
