Te Ao Hou marae is located on the outskirts of Whanganui city on the northern bank of the Whanganui River, just off State Highway 4. Its principal hapū is Ngāti Tupoho of the iwi Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi.
The wharenui is named Te Puāwaitanga and the wharekai is Te Ao Marama. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Aotea, the maunga Taranaki and the awa Whanganui.
