Tauarau marae is located 3 km south of Rūātoki. The primary hapū is Ngāti Rongo of Ngāi Tūhoe.
The whare tipuna is named Rongokarae. Tauarau marae connects ancestrally to the Mataatua waka, the maunga Maungapōhatu and the awa Whakatāne.
