Tauanui marae is located in Waimana, 32 km south of Whakatāne. The primary hapū is Te Whakatāne of Ngāi Tūhoe.

The whare tipuna is named Te Poho-o-Tamatea. Tauanui marae connects ancestrally to the Mataatua waka, the maunga Maungapōhatu and the awa Tauranga.
