Taniwhamarae is about 1 km east of Taniwha township. The principal hapū that affiliate with this marae include Ngāti Kuiaarangi, Ngāti Mahuta, Ngāti Tai and Ngāti Whaawhaakia.
The wharenui is named Me Whakatupu ki te Hua o te Rengarenga. The marae connects ancestrally to the greater waka collective of Tainui and the maunga Taupiri.
