Takirau marae is located on the banks of the Waitōtara River, 30 km north of State Highway 3. Its principal hapū is Ngāti Pourua of the iwi Ngā Rauru.
The wharenui is named Ko Te Marunga Nui o Pourua. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Aotea and the maunga Taranaki.
