Tahaawai marae is located on the upper reaches of the Whangaroa Harbour, east of the Northland township of Kaeo, off State Highway 10. It shares connection with both Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa and the Ngāpuhi confederation.
The wharenui is named Te Awaroa. Tahaawai marae is connected to the maunga named Maungaemiemi, to Pupuke River, and to Whangaroa Harbour.
