Rākaunui marae is located, 30 km from Kawhia township on the inner edges of the Kawhia harbour, and to the 63 km to the west of Te Awamutu. The primary hapū for this marae are Ngāti Ngutu and Ngāti Paretekawa of the Waikato-Tainui tribal confederation, and Kerapa, Takiari and Te Waha of Ngāti Maniopoto.
The whare tupuna is known as Moanakahakore. The marae connects ancestrally to the Tainui waka, the moana Kawhia, and the maunga Pirongia and Hikurangi.
