Pupuaruhe marae, also known as Toroa marae, is located on the northern edges of Whakatāne, on the banks of the Whakatāne River. The primary hapū are Te Patuwai and Ngāti Maumoana of Ngāti Awa.
The whare tipuna is called Toroa and the wharekai Kakepikitua. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Mataatua, the maunga Pūtauaki and the awa Whakatāne. The history of the tipuna whare Toroa states that it was gifted to Ngāti Awa iwi whanui by Te Hurinui Apanui, and in turn Ngāti Awa offered the sacred whare to Te Patuwai hapū. At the Pupuaruhe urupa stands the whare karakia named Hato Anaru o Te Haahi Mihinare.
