Pungarehu marae is located roughly 20 km north of Whanganui, just off State Highway 4. Its principal hapū is Ngāti Tuera of the iwi Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi.
The wharenui is named Maranganui Tuarua. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Aotea, the maunga Ruapehu and the awa Whanganui.
