Punawhakareia marae is located on the southern shores of Lake Rotoiti at Punawhakareia Bay. The primary hapū is Ngāti Te Rangiunuora of Ngāti Pikiao.
The whare tupuna is named Uenuku-mai-Rarotonga, and the marae connects ancestrally to Te Arawa waka and the maunga Matawhaura.
