Punaruku marae is located about 6 km northwest of Te Araroa on Te Araroa Road. Its principal hapū is Te Whanau a Hinerupe of Ngāti Porou iwi.
The wharenui is called Te Pikitanga o Kauwhakatuakina. The marae connects ancestrally to Horouta waka, the maunga Pukeatapu, and the awa Punaruku.
