Puawairua marae is located just north of Whakatāne. The primary hapū is Ngāti Hikakino of Ngāti Awa.
The whare tipuna is also called Puawairua and the whare kai is Te Rerehu. Puawairua marae connects ancestrally to the waka Mataatua and the awa Te Awa o te Atua and Whakatāne.
