Pākaraka marae is located west of Maxwell. Its principal hapū is Ngāti Maika of the iwi Ngā Rauru.
The wharenui is named Te Whānau Pani (II and III), a name that has been applied to earlier whare also. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Aotea and the maunga Taranaki.
