Papakai marae is located in Rotoaira, 25 km southwest of Tūrangi. Its principal hapū is Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro of Ngāti Tūwharetoa iwi.
The wharenui is called Rākeipoho. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Te Arawa, the maunga Tongariro, the awa Pāpākai and Wairehu, and the roto Rotoaira.
