Ngātapa marae is located about 20 km northwest of Gisborne. It belongs to the hapū Te whānau a Eria and Te Whānau a Kai of Te Aitanga ā Māhaki with connections also to Ngai Tūhoe.
The marae is ancestrally defined by the awa Waipaoa, the two maunga of Ngātapa and Maungahaumi, and connects to the greater waka collective of Horouta.
