    Te Tai Tokerau

Matihetihe marae can be found in the northern Hokianga in the coastal settlement of Mitimiti, just west of Panguru. The wharenui is Tu Moana, and the historic whare karakia is Hato Hemi. The primary hapū is Te Tao Maui of Te Rarawa. It is also connected to several old hapū including Pororewarewa, Ngāti Kaha, Ngāti Hinerangi and Whānaumaii with strong links to Ngāti Ruanui/Te Aupōuri.

It is said that Mitimiti is a spiritual resting place, where those that have passed on drink from the waters of Moetangi before continuing on with their journey to Te Rerenga Wairua (Te Reinga / Cape Reinga).
