Maniaroa marae is located in the coastal settlement of Awakino, 75 km south west of Te Kūiti on State Highway 3. The principal hapū associated with Maniaroa marae include Ngāti Rākei, Rungaterangi and Waiora.
The wharenui is named Te Kohaarua. The marae connects ancestrally to the Tainui waka and tribal collective of Ngāti Maniapoto.
During its great voyage to Aotearoa, some aboard the Tainui waka disembarked just north of Maniaroa marae at Mōkau. The anchor stone of the waka now rests in the concrete foundations of Maniaroa marae. The marae complex has been built, extended, and relocated a number of times from the 1800s to the mid-1900s. The third wharenui was formally opened in 1987.
