Kokohinau (Tuhimata) marae is located north of Te Teko on the banks of the Rangitaiki River. The primary hapū is Te Pahipoto of Ngāti Awa.
The whare is called O Ruatapare or Oruatapere and the wharekai is Waipunarangi. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Mataatua, the maunga Pūtauaki and the awa Rangitaiki.
Te Pahipoto has been described as "Te iwi tirare kai pahao kai nei' or 'The tribe that collects food and gathers it by the net full'.
