Katihiku is located about 7 km southwest of Otaki, off State Highway 1 and close to the coast. The principal hapū is Ngāti Huia of the Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga confederation.
The whare tupuna is named Tamatehura. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Tainui, the maunga Tararua and the awa Otaki. It is said that Katihiku was originally of the Muaūpoko confederation, but that around 1820 Te Rangihaeata and his warriors took it as a Ngāti Huia stronghold.
