Kaiewe Marae is located just beneath Pirongia maunga, inland on the Kawhia coast. It sits within the 36,000 acre Pirongia West Block which was awarded in 1892 and 1894 to the hapū of Ngāti Hikairo. There are at least 24 hapū of Ngāti Hikairo that affliate to Kaiewe Marae. The principal hapū is Ngāti Horotakere, and its various sub-hapū.
The section was taken for school purposes and was returned to Te Rūnanganui-o- Ngāti Hikairo in 1997. It was set aside as Marae Reservation and gazetted in 1997 “for the common use and benefit of Ngāti Hikairo."
The Kaiewe Marae Trustees administer the reservation on behalf of Ngāti Hikairo. There are currently no buildings on the Marae Reservation.
