Ōwhata marae is located at Hinemoa Point along the shores of the lake known as Te Rotorua nui a Kahumatamomoe. The primary hapū is Ngāti Te Roro o te Rangi and the koromātua associated with this hapū are Ngāti Korouateka, Ngāti Manawa, Ngāti Hinerangi and Ngāti Tamahika.
The ancestral houses that continue to stand at Ōwhata Marae are Tūtānekai and Hinemoa. The marae also connects ancestrally to the iwi of Ngāti Whakaue and the waka of Te Arawa.
Hinemoa, reknowned for her beauty would sit on the rock named Iriirikapua and listen to Tūtānekai play his kōauau each night from Mokoia Island.
She formed a plan and fastened hollowed gourds to her body to keep her afloat and swam the cold waters of Lake Rotorua under the cover of darkness to reach Mokoia Island where she found warmth in the hot spring, Waikimihia, before Tūtānekai found her there.
