Ōwhata marae is located on the southern shores of the Herekino Harbour, 32 km south of Kaitaia. The primary hapu is Ngāti Torotoroa of Te Rarawa.
The name of the whare tupuna is Kingi Hori. Ōwhata connects ancestrally to the maunga Rawhitiroa, the awa Puhata Wairere and the moana Nga-Tai-o-e-Uru.
