Ōtākou marae can be found 26 km from Dunedin on the Otago Peninsula. The primary hapu is Te Ruahikihiki with links to Kāti Hawea, Kāti Moki II and Taoka.
The wharenui Tamatea replaced the old meeting house Te Mahi Tamariki, and was built in the period 1940–45, along with the Otakou Maori Memorial Methodist Church, which is also on the site.
Ōtākou marae ancestrally connects to the waka Uruao and the maunga Te Atua o Taiehu and Pukekura (more commonly known as Taiaroa Heads).
