Ōngāroto marae is located 45 km north of Taupō, on the banks of the Waikato River. The primary hapū is Ngāti Whaita of Ngāti Raukawa.
The whare tipuna is named Whaita. Ōngāroto connects ancestrally to the Tainui waka, the maunga Pohaturoa and the awa Waikato.
