Whareponga marae is located 20 km east of Ruatōria and 45 km north of Tokomaru Bay, on the East Cape. Its primary hapū are Ngāi Tangihaere and Te Aitanga a Mate of Ngāti Porou.
The wharenui is named Materoa, the wharekai is Ngā Rongo Toa and the whare karakia is Hato Petera. There are two urupā: Ngā Koiwi and Taiporutu. The marae connects ancestrally to Horouta waka, the awa Hotohoto and the maunga Kokai.
