Wharekawa (Kaiaua) marae is located in Whakatiwai, two minutes drive north of Kaiaua on the corner of Rata and East Coast roads. The primary hapu are Te Uri Karaka, Ngāti Hura, Kauahi and Ngāti Kapu of the Hauraki-Tainui iwi Ngāti Paoa and also Ngāti Whanaunga.
The marae consists of the wharenui Paoa–Whanaunga, the wharekai Whakatutuki, the whare karakia Paoa, and Whare Akonga, which houses Te Kohanga Reo O Wharekawa. Wharekawa marae connects ancestrally to the maunga Kohukohunui, to Tikapa moana and to the awa Whakatiwai.
