Te Kutaroa marae is located at Whakarau, on Matakana Island, in Tauranga moana. It is home to the hapū Ngāti Tauaiti of the iwi Ngāi Te Rangi.
The wharenui is named Tauaiti and the wharekai is Hineaorangi. The original whare was also named Tauaiti, and the wharekai was Hineaorangi, which stood until 1967, and was impacted by land amalgamations. The surrounding whenua is also Te Kutaroa, named after the bullrush found in abundance in the area.
