Te Huehue marae is located inland to the south of Kaikohe in the area known as Mataraua. Its main hapū is Ngā Tawake ki te Waoku (forest) of the iwi Ngāpuhi. The other two hapū of Ngāi Tawake are named Ngāi Tawake ki te Tuawhenua (ancestral lands), based at Rāhiri/Waimate, and Ngāi Tawake ki te Takutai moana (coastal region), which once controlled the coastal lands between Takou Bay and the maunga Rakaumangamanga.
The wharenui is also named Te Huehue and the wharekai is Kare Ariki.
