Rongopai marae is located 20 km northwest of Gisborne, at Waituhi. Its principal hapū is Te Whānau a Kai of Te Aitanga ā Māhaki.
The wharenui of Rongopai is a uniquely painted house that was created in honour of the prophet Te Kooti. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Horouta, the awa Waipaoa and the maunga of Ngātapa and Maungahaumi.
