Putaanga marae is located immediately north of the Waiapu River and east of Tikitiki. Its principal hapū is Ngāti Putaanga of the iwi Ngāti Porou.
The wharenui is also called Putaanga, the wharekai is Tai Karera. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Horouta, the maunga Pukeruru and the awa Poroporo and Te Kohu.
