Piki te Aroha marae is located just off State Highway 1 on the southern side of the Omahuta and Puketi forest, north of Okaihau, in the area known as Rāhiri. Its principal hapū are Ngāti Toro, Ngāti Hao, Ngāi Tawake ki te Moana and not least, Ngāi Tawake ki te Tuawhenua.
The customary authority of the latter hapu includes Waimate. In conjunction with Ngāi Tawake ki te Waoku (forest) hapū at Mataraua and Ngāi Tawake ki te Moana, Ngāi Tawake once held control over lands between upper Hokianga Harbour and Takou Bay. Their maunga is named Otamaewa.
