Awatere marae is located about 7 km south of Te Araroa on Te Araroa Road. Its principal hapū is Te Whānau a Hinerupe of Ngāti Porou iwi.
The wharenui is called Te Aotāihi; it replaced the old house, Awatere, which is now the wharekai. The marae connects ancestrally to Horouta waka, the maunga Hikurangi and awa Whetumatarau and the Awatere.
