Ōwhata marae is located at Hinemoa Point on Lake Rotorua. The primary hapū are Ngāti Te Roro-o-te-rangi, Ngāti Hei, Ngāti Korouateka and Ngāti Tukutahi of Ngāti Whakaue.
The whare tupuna is called Tūtānekai and the wharekai is Hinemoa. The marae connects ancestrally to Te Arawa waka.
It is from here that Hinemoa heard the kōauau of Tūtānekai drifting across the lake as she sat on the rock Iri-irikapua. She then swam through the night across to Mokoia Island to be with Tūtānekai.
