Waikare marae is located 4 km to the east of Te Kauwhata. The principal hapū that associate with Waikare include Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Naho, Ngāti Pou and Ngāti Taratikitiki.
The wharenui is named Ngāti Hine and the marae connects ancestrally to the awa Waikato, the maunga Taupiri and the waka collective of Tainui.
