Whanganui marae is located in Whanganui Bay, on the west side of Lake Taupō, off the Western Bay Road (SH32). The primary hapū is Ngāti Te Maunga of the iwi Ngāti Tūwharetoa.
The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Te Arawa, and the roto Taupō.
