Uwhiārae marae is located just 1 km from Ruatāhuna in Te Urewera. The primary hapū is Ngāti Te Paena of Ngāi Tūhoe.
The whare tipuna is named Te Paena (built in 1925). Uwhiārae connects ancestrally to the Mātaatua waka, the maunga Maungapōhatu and the moana Waikaremoana.
