Te Wainui marae is located just west of Whatatutu, 50 km inland from Gisborne. It belongs to the hapū of Te Wainui of the iwi Ngā Ariki Kaiputahi.
The whare is named Te Whare o Hera. The marae ancestrally connects to the waka Horouta, and is further defined by the awa Mangatū and the maunga Mangahaumia.
