Te Upoko o te Whenua marae (also known as Tarata) is located on the banks of the Waitara (Awaroa) River in Tarata. Its principal hapū include Ngāti Maruwharanui, Ngāti Hinemōkai, Ngāti Te Ika, Ngāti Kui, Ngāti Kōpu/Kōpua, Ngāti Tamatāpui, Ngāti Tamakehu and Ngāriki of the iwi Ngāti Maru.
The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Aotea, the maunga Taranaki and the awa Waitara (Awaroa).
