Tanatana marae is 34 km south of Ōpōtiki. Its primary hapū is Ngāti Rere of Ngāi Tūhoe.
The wharenui is called Te Poho-o-Tuhoe. The marae connects ancestrally to the Mataatua waka, the awa Tauranga and the maunga Maungapōhatu.
